If your garage door is starting to look a little bit worse for wear, then it might be time to consider installing a new one.
Your garage door is a big investment, and not only will it play an important part in your garage’s security, it also contributes to the overall look and feel of your property.
We’re going to take a quick look at how to make sure you buy the very best garage door, looking at the cost, material and how easy it’s going to be to maintain in the future.
Garage doors are made in a wide range of materials, primarily wood, steel, fibreglass, vinyl and aluminium.
All have their own benefits, although steel and wood are by far the most common. Wood is one of the most attractive materials to look at, although it’s also one of the least durable, and therefore needs the most maintenance.
Through the years, wood doors are more likely to warp and crack as they face up to the elements, and so they require repainting or refinishing every couple of years.
On the other hand, steel is popular for being a very strong and low maintenance option, while also being relatively affordable. And if you really want a beautiful wood door, there are plenty of steel options which imitate a wooden look.
We asked Duratec Security Solutions why steel was such a popular choice and they said: “Steel doors are excellent as they aren’t at risk of warping or cracking and because they’re often vinyl clad or given a polyester finish, they won’t rust and won’t require as much repainting.
“The higher-end steel doors will also include some form of foam insulation which will keep the garage cool in the summer and warm in the winter, as well as making the door lighter and easier to operate.”
Another option is a fibreglass door, made from an aluminium frame. These are amongst the most lightweight of doors, although they are poor insulators, and can break easily, especially in colder conditions.
There’s a host of additional extras that you might wish to consider to add to whichever door you choose to opt for.
For example, you could add window sections to add a bit of decoration to the door, or to help let natural light into the garage.
Electronic door openers are also popular, and can be fitted to a key chain or given additional security features such as a personal PIN code.
One of the most important things to consider is, of course, how much you can expect to pay for your new garage door.
The answer obviously depends largely on exactly what style and quality of door you’re opting for.
For example, a low-quality door made of composite wood could cost as little as £300 if you install it yourself, whereas a top-end one with full installation could be as much as £7,000.
The average door will fall somewhere in between, with an average estimate being between £600 and £1,250 for a mid-range garage door, or £2,000 for a slightly better one.
Also consider that you’ll have to add on another £150-£200 if you want to add in an automatic opener.
While a new garage door might seem like a big investment, it should add value to your house according to this article from Fox News which estimates that a new one will fetch an 85% return on investment.
